WILLA CATHER was born in 1873 in Back Creek Alley, Virginia. Her family moved to Nebraska in 1883, and the Midwest served as an inspiration for her novels. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school class, she went on to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, completing her degree at a time when women were not readily accepted in the academic world. Before becoming a full-time writer, Cather taught English at a Pittsburgh high school. In 1906, she moved to New York City to work for McClure's magazine. Her novels include My Antonia, O, Pioneers! and One of Ours, which won the 1923 Pulitzer Prize. She lived in Greenwich Village until her death in 1947.
