NGUGI WA THIONG'O (1938– ) is east Africa's best known writer. His novels in English, Weep Not Child, The River Between, A Grain of Wheat, and Petals of Blood, record the Kenyan struggle against colonial oppression. Since his arrest in 1977 after the performance of his drama, ""Ngaahika Ndeenda (I Will Marry When I Want),"" he has lived in political exile in Britain and the United States.
