HANNA BEATE SCHÖPP-SCHILLING was born in 1940. She was educated at the Universities of Munich and Berlin, and at Yale, and held a Ph.D. in American studies. She was a member of CEDAW from 1989 to 2009, where she held the positions of Rapporteur and vice-chair of the committee from 2001-2004. She was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the German Institute for Human Rights. Her publications focus on women's studies, labor market studies, and human rights, and she lectured extensively throughout Europe, North and Central America, and Western and Eastern Asia. She was also a consultant and university lecturer in the areas of women, gender, youth, and human rights issues.
