DING LING, (1904–1986) was a political activist who used her writing to defy social norms and assert control over her body, her mind, and her future. Though her books were banned in 1957, Ding Ling wrote over three hundred works in her lifetime, the most famous of which is her 1927 novella, Miss Sophie's Diary. A few years before her death Ding Ling was a guest of the University of Iowa's International Writing Program.
