CEES FLINTERMAN studied international law at the University of Virginia and Leiden University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1981. He has taught at Leiden University, the University of Ghana, and at Maastricht University. He has been a member of the CEDAW committee since 2002. As a representative for the Netherlands, Flinterman has served on several UN committees, including as an alternate member on the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities from 1987-1991 and as the head of the delegation for the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN Commission on Human Rights in 1993. He currently teaches at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, where he is also the director of the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) and the School of Human Rights Research.
