Like Cora James, actress, director, and playwright ALICE CHILDRESS was born in Charleston, South Carolina and lived in Harlem. Her play ""Trouble in Mind"" won an Obie Award. Childress was the first woman to win this award and the first black woman to have a play produced professionally on Broadway. Her controversial young adult novel A Hero Ain't Nothing but a Sandwich was published in 1973 to national critical acclaim.
