In February 2012, a Russian feminist punk collective Pussy Riot staged a performance in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, asking the Virgin Mary to drive out president Vladimir Putin. They were convicted of felony hooliganism. Their “Punk Prayer,” court statements, and letters from prison have made them icons of dissent and freedom of expression.

"I call on all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment. I urge artists around the world to speak up in protest against this travesty. They've spent enough time in jail. I call on all of Russia to let Pussy Riot go free." —Madonna

"In my opinion, the Russian authorities should let them go home to their families and children." —Bjork

“I hope you can stay strong and believe that I and many others like me who believe in free speech will do everything in our power to support you and the idea of artistic freedom.” —Paul McCartney

“Can music change the world? Only in very special circumstances. Once in a generation, a band can create a moment on which society turns. Through your brave actions you have provided Russia with such a moment. Your fellow musicians stand with you.” —Billy Bragg
